Greetings in the Name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ – Amen. The Provost of All Saints’ Cathedral, Kampala, The Very Rev. Dr. Canon Rebecca Nyegenye posed the following Questions as she began her Exposition to the three (3) Congregations on Sunday 7 th April 2019 on the Theme Cry for godly Mentors” based on Titus. 2:1-15 and Luke.1:46-56 concurrently: “How do we train, build and mentor our characters amidst a diverse corrupted society? Does our mentoring shape our character development? Just like Mary, do we discern and recognize God’s role in using us to impact on others?” The Preacher explicitly noted that her message would cut through the minds of the women Listeners in the Congregations particularly as they [together with the men folks] were celebrating and remembering Mary’s Day. Dr. Nyegenye re-echoed the following:

  1. That Mary stood out as a woman of excellence NOT because of her feminist role(s) BUT simply because she was God’s choice to carry Jesus Christ, humble in God’s presence, believed God and above all a Patron and embodiment of humility [ Luke 1:39-45];
  2. Mentors are needed now to speak into our lives, encourage reconciliation and also change others – to provide that singular confidentiality ‘ in order to protect one’s dignity and pain’;
  3. The “where to go, whom to go to and whom to confide in” can create a space for those Mothers who are ready to mentor and assist others overcome their challenges;

The Preacher provided qualitative indicators on how to mentor others and these included; being intimate with
God, having an identity as a child of God and developing a vision for the Kingdom of God. Dr. Nyegenye
continued to talk to the hearts of the Congregants and pointed out the following practical ways:

  1. Old women should teach young people what is good [verse 4] with corresponding responsibility;
  2. Desist from a slanderous nature [of Gossiping] and talk little [ Titus. 2:3];
  3. Mentors should Live up to what they teach, avoiding too much wine and become references/ mirrors for others!
  4. She cautioned the congregants especially young adults to desist from thinking of dream marriages as viewed and potrayed by their ‘mentors’ i.e romantic books and nigerian movies- For marriage is not a movie But a reality that has to be lived out seeking godly cousel and NOT to be acted out. Mothers therefore MUST rise up to the reality and teach their girls to be busy at home and mentor them with love and responsibility so as to glorify God.

Guiding Questions and Prayer Moments

  1. Reflecting on the entire message, have an open discussion moment on mentorship in the Family, Church and at your work place using various Examples. Pick the Issues raised and jot them down
  2. Prayerfully reflect on [1 Peter 4:7-11] and Spend the rest of the Time in prayer seeking guidance of the Holy Spirit to shape us in being godly Mentors.
