Praise God Brethren! The previous Sunday, Mr. Sam Mwesige preached on the topic; Called to
Active Discipleship to the three [3] ASC congregations drawing Biblical references from Colossians 1:9-14 and Matthew 28:16-20. He Defined a Calling as a strong desire or feeling of duty to do a particular Job, especially one in which you help other people and Discipleship as a process of making someone become like Jesus Christ through sharing the reality of Life to Life [Proverbs 27:17] Or it is a process of producing transformed lives who develop a pattern of following, trusting and learning from Jesus Christ and eventually have them reproduce others. A disciple is a learner and follower of Jesus who calls us today to follow him and will make us fishers of men [Mark 1:17].

Mr. Mwesige pointed out that the City of Colossea was characterized by paganism, immorality, idolatry, atheism, corruption, among others and Paul’s prayer for them was to be spirit filled with the knowledge God’s word and live a transformed life style. It is believed that Paul discipled Epaphras whom he charged to share the good news of salvation to this city. As families, Church and Nation today, we aren’t any different from them therefore Paul’s approach of intentional discipleship is important for our generation. All Christians are called to active discipleship since it builds, strengthens and roots the church in the Knowledge of God’s word and failure to do this, is rebellion before him and sinful as witchcraft [1Samuel 15:23].

He pointed out 10 qualities of discipleship; Love Jesus above everyone and everything, Selfless
and sacrifice [others needs before own], Humility [Philippians 2:8-11], follow Christ and his
commandments, not easily influenced by the world, Have self control, Live the word [Matthew
5:14-16], Professes the Word always, Loves as Christ did, and recognizes that you need God’s
strength to be a true disciple.

Mr. Mwesige urged parishioners especially parents to intentionally disciple their children so as
to have a Godly generation and this is applicable if we purpose to be Faithful, Teachable and
Available to be sent and used of the Lord [2 Timothy 2:2]. God’s son Jesus Christ is the best
example we can all learn from and has given us the mandate to do the same. To be a disciple, starts by accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and saviour and then you faithfully grow in walking daily in the knowledge and obedience of His Word. For disciples to arise, it takes one to evangelize, be established, and equipped for him/her to be sent. The ultimate reason for discipleship is because of God’s love for mankind in desiring us to come out of the world so that all sinners may be saved. [1John 2:17, 1 Timothy 2:3-4, 2Peter 3:9, 15 and John 3:16].

Guidelines and Questions:

  1. Do you know of personalities that purposed to disciple others in the Bible?
  2. Were you discipled? , and have you purposed to disciple others? If yes, Share your
testimony. If not! Share your challenge[s] or excuse[s].
  3. Prayerfully present each one of them to the Lord and purpose to act.
