Text: 1 Samuel 2:1-36

Hannah, Samuel’s mother, utters a prayer that glorifies Yahweh for who He is and what He does for His people. The next passage tells us about the sons of Eli, the High Priest. They are wicked men and have no interest in glorifying God or doing good for His people. In all his life, their father has done little to control the wickedness of his sons (3:13). Sadly, as a result, the sons, Eli, himself and his descendants come under a curse.

Let us not think that we must be living a perfect life in order to receive blessings from the Lord. That is impossible. Jesus accomplished perfection for us. So, in Christ you are blessed. But Eli’s sons had no love for God, and although father Eli, had good words to say, he did not discipline them. He cared more for his sons’ than for God’s glory. He spoke words of rebuke, but there was not disciplinary action. Sinful life of the sons is common to humanity. Only the grace of God can drive it away. Pray for God’s grace to yourself and as you discipline your children.

Meditate on verse 12. What is God teaching you in this verse?

Our Lord and heavenly Father, I pray for a special calling of the Holy Spirit for my family members to know You and to serve You always. In Your name Jesus Christ I have prayed. Amen.
