Judges11:1-29
Israel suffered from foreign oppression because of their faithlessness to
Yahweh (10:13). After 18 years (10:8), Yahweh sent a deliverer, Jephthah.
Though his father was an Israelite, his mother was a prostitute, so his brothers had driven him away. But when they needed help against the enemy, they begged Jephthah to lead them, because he had established himself as a mighty warrior (11:1). He was empowered by the Holy Spirit (v.29); so, he brought deliverance to Israel.
Jesus was also rejected by His brothers, those of Mary (John 7:3-9) and those of other Jews (John1:11). But when God’s people cry out for deliverance from sin, God sends the greater warrior, His very own eternal Son, Jesus. Jesus was empowered by the Holy Spirit (John1:32) to do the work of deliverance.
God will do this for you individually, as well. Do you fear condemnation from God’s judgment? Are you trapped in a sin and you cannot find the strength to break free? Cry out to Jesus and He will deliver you.
Meditate on verse 1. What is God teaching you in this verse?
Almighty heavenly Father, I pray that you remove my weaknesses, fill me with the Holy Spirit and use me to multiply Your Kingdom. In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ I have prayed, Amen.
