Text: Nehemiah 3:1-32
Nehemiah examined the damage around Jerusalem (2:13), he knew what had to be done, and he called the people to the task. This chapter is a list of those participating in the re-building of the Jerusalem wall. The priests helped (v.1), some of the skilled craftsmen worked (v.31), etc., but sadly some of the socalled “important” people refused (v.5). Generally, all those living in Jerusalem were eager to contribute to the effort.
Jesus Christ is calling His people to work at building His Kingdom. Of course, Jesus could do it all by Himself just by speaking the Word, but He chooses to use His people. There are a few Christians who are important persons in society, but almost all of us are ordinary people. God gives each of us different abilities/ gifts to contribute to the building of His Church. There used to be apostles and prophets, however, such offices are now no more. Some are evangelists, pastors, teachers, deacons, some are praying, cleaning the chapel, visiting the sick, etc. We all are members of the Body of Christ (1 Cor.12), and we all have work to do in His Kingdom. Whatever the Lord assigns you, do it for His glory and for the good of His people (Col.3:23).
Meditate on verse 5. What are you learning from this verse?
Heavenly Father, help me to be humble before You and all the people. Help
me participate in fulfilling the Great Commission in my generation. Amen.
