Text: Job 28:1-28
Jōb’s speech begins with him talking about the great wealth of the earth,
treasures that men can find, bring out and use. He then goes on to talk about how elusive wisdom is; where can it be found, it is not in the earth or the sea; creatures do not know where wisdom is. It cannot be purchased with gold, its value is beyond full understanding. But God knows, because God designs, sees, and knows everything. Jōb concludes this chapter by saying, wisdom is found by fearing God and by turning away from evil (v.28).
King Solomon says this twice in his book of Proverbs: “The fear of the LORD
is the beginning of knowledge…” (1:7, ESV); “The fear of the LORD is the
beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight” (9:10,
ESV). Apostle James also says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God,
who gives generously …” (James 1:5. ESV). Regarding things of God, we do not have wisdom. So, by the grace of God, we gain wisdom through Jesus Christ (1 Cor.1:30), by the work of the Holy Spirit (Eph.1:17), only according to God’s Word (119:169).
Meditate on verse 28. How are you going to apply it to your life?
Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, give me a heart that reveres Your great
name as it will be my beginning of my wisdom. Amen.
