Text: Nehemiah 9:1-38
Again, the people gather as a worshipping community. During the first part of the assembly there are readings from God’s Word. As they confess, they begin by declaring who God is and what He has done for the nation: He is the Creator of all things, made covenant with Abraham, delivered them from captivity, gave them His commands and the land. But their fathers and themselves sinned by disobeying God’s law, so they were exiled. But they cried out to God for His forgiveness which He gave richly. Then the people recommitted themselves to God’s covenant.
This confession and covenant renewal should be part of every worship service, every time Christians gather on the Lord’s Day. At several points during worship there must be the reading of God’s Word, confession of sin, and renewing of the covenant, which is what we do especially at Holy Communion. Because we break covenant (sin) every day, we need the Saviour, Jesus. He fulfilled the covenant for us, His people, perfectly. Let us now live obediently from hearts of love, and every Sunday gather as grateful people giving glory to God.
Meditate on verses 5-15. What is God teaching you in this prayer?
Heavenly Father, You alone are our everlasting Father, You are the Creator of everything seen and unseen and You are the provider of all our needs. Amen.
