Text: Ezekiel 34:1-31.
The Shepherds of Israel are leaders, especially the kings, but it includes anyone who is in authority. The work of a rural shepherd implies serious, but tender, concern for the well-being of the sheep. He especially guards against them wandering away. But Israel’s shepherds almost always served themselves. These spiritual shepherds did not care about the spiritual well-being of the nation. As a result, the people wandered away from Yahweh, and destruction came upon the people and their kings.
The Lord Jesus Christ referred to Himself as the “Good Shepherd” (John 10:11).
Shepherd Jesus even willingly died for the well-being of His sheep, His people, so that our wandering would end, and we would be brought back to God. In today’s churches, sadly, many so-called pastors are only interested in serving themselves.
They take from the sheep, the members, and take whatever they can. If Jesus has put you in church leadership, then treat His people favourably, love them and care for them as He does. The Lord will hold you accountable, as He did the Shepherds of Israel.
Meditate on verse 2-5. What is God teaching you in these verses? What are you going to do differently?
Heavenly Father, forgive me wherever and whenever I have been selfish and my leadership style has caused many to suffer and scatter. I repent in the name of Jesus Christ, my Saviour and Lord. Amen.
