Text: Proverbs 22:1-29
As with other proverbs, this one uses an extreme example to instruct our
thinking. Very few skilled workmen will serve kings. The majority of quality
workmen will live modest lives and have modest jobs. The point to learn is
that being a skilled, quality worker is honorable. Our prime goal in life is not to seek honor, though we do want to please God and our employers. But being a good workman will be recognized and honored. If King Solomon is the writer of this proverb, then he speaks from experience. He chose good and honorable workmen for his kingdom and construction of the Temple.
Let us remember that this is not how King Jesus chooses those whom He will save from hell. There is nothing about us that is honorable or acceptable to God.
We are chosen purely according to God’s own reasons and that is all. But because we belong to Christ by grace, let us serve Him and the Church and others with skill and honor. By God’s grace let us serve our King and others as worship.
Meditate on verse 29. How are you going to apply it to your life?
Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, help me excel in my work so that Your
name will be glorified. Amen.
