Text: 1 Samuel 20:1-42
Because Jonathan loved David, he tried to protect him (David). In this Chapter, we read how Jonathan planned to learn of Saul’s unjust desire to kill David and then provide a signal for him to escape. King Saul was so hateful of David that he even tried to kill his own son, Jonathan, because Jonathan loved David (v.33). When Jonathan spoke well of David to his father the King, he knew his own life would be in danger. But he was willing to risk his life for David’s protection.

An interesting turn on this relationship is found in Christ’s love for us. Jesus knew the Father’s wrath against our sin was right and just. We deserved condemnation and yet, for our sake, Jesus stood between God’s justice and us.
He gave His life for ours, Jesus died to pay our punishment. His resurrection proves the penalty is paid in full and Jesus continues to intercede on our behalf.
Though we may never be able to pay someone’s sin penalty, we can intercede for them, praying that God will give His saving grace to them.

Meditate on verse 42. How are you going to apply it to your life?
Faithful and ever loving Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, I pray that You gift me with genuine love for my friends. And Father I pray for genuine friends. Amen.
