Text: 1 Kings 18:1-46
Ever since King Jeroboam’s idolatry, the people of God had been led away from
Yahweh for about eighty years, even to the point of killing His preachers (v.4).
By the hand of Elijah, Yahweh will prove that He is the only true God, that
all others are imaginations of men. This terrific story provides a very graphic
display of the Power of God and Judgment: only the Creator could have done
this, and the false prophets were thus executed (v.40). Not only does God show
Himself to be God, but it is a sobering warning to those who refuse to believe,
trust, and follow the only Living God – Yahweh.
Sadly, Israel will continue in apostasy until God sends destruction, and God’s
people will always be persecuted until the end of time. But Jesus Christ has
shown Himself to be the only true God. He did not send fire to destroy, but He
did raise the dead to life. He even raised Himself from the dead (John.2:19),
thereby showing Himself to be the only Living God. If Jesus can bring the
dead to life, He can also bring His enemies down to death. Please dear reader,
our Prophet, King, and God, Jesus Christ, is not to be ignored. Repent of your
ungodly ways, submit to His Lordship, and receive His offer of saving grace.
Meditate on verse 21. How are you going to apply it to your life?
Almighty heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, I choose to follow You
alone, You are the Lord Almighty, the Maker of heaven and earth. You created
everything from nothing by Your powerful Word. The power, glory and honour
belong to You alone! Amen.
