Text: Job 40:1-24
Job had been wanting to talk directly with God, but when God does come to
him, Job realizes that he is of little importance and should have said nothing.
Then God continues speaking to Job. He speaks now about Behemoth (probably the hippopotamus), one of the deadliest animals in Africa. Yahweh calls it the first, or one of the greatest of His creatures. It dwells in the waters and feeds on the mountains. It is a powerful beast that ranges over all the land. Is any person able to grab it and put a ring in its nose like an ox for plowing?
Job was very wise when he realized he should not have spoken. Scripture
teaches us, “Be not rash with your mouth… before God, for God is in heaven
and you are on earth. Therefore let your words be few.” (Eccl.5:2, ESV). As Jesus also taught pagans think they must use many words for God to hear them. But your Heavenly Father knows what you need before you even ask (Mat.6:7-8).
And like harnessing the hippo, it would be impossible to harness God to your own desires. In redemption, Jesus Christ chooses whomsoever He desires and gives them eternal life, and no one can stop Him (John 6:44; 10:29).
Meditate on verses 15-16. What is God teaching you in these verses?
Heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, the creation displays Your
splendor! The creation displays Your power and glory. Amen.
