Text: 2 Kings 16:1-20
Two kings were coming against Ahaz, King of Judah. What Judah should have done was to seek Yahweh for deliverance. Nothing is impossible for the Lord.
However, Ahaz was not a man who loved or trusted Yahweh; so, he sent a
message to Assyria asking for their help. The Assyrians were victorious, and when King Ahaz went to meet with the Assyrian King, Ahaz participated in idolatrous worship. He liked the style of the altar, and had a copy made for Jerusalem. He then removed the altar that Yahweh designed, and used the new altar for the feigned worship of God.

When Jesus cleared the Temple (John 2), He was removing false worship. Jesus Christ alone is our deliverer, and leaders in Christ’s Church must be very careful that the “worship” being done in their congregations is not what they think is attractive or useful. Rather, they must lead the people in Christ centered, biblically based worship. Only this will glorify the Triune God and strengthen His people.

Meditate on verse 2. What is God teaching you in this verse? How are you
going to respond to it?
Father, forgive us as we have done evil in Your sight, especially in Your Church.
Cleanse us and restore us to true worship and fellowship with You. In the name of Jesus Christ we have prayed. Amen
