Text: Deuteronomy 18:9-14
The book of Deuteronomy is the last of Moses’ five books, which he wrote and spoke to the people shortly before his death and before entry of Israel into the land of Canaan. This book was meant to teach and encourage the people on how to live and serve Yahweh. Listed in the passage today are several sins that the Canaanites committed as they sought the will of their gods (which are imaginary). Israel was set apart to seek and serve Yahweh only. Yahweh is the only true and living God.

Listening to false gods is what got Adam and Eve expelled from the garden and subsequently sin came into the world. Israel was rebellious and did not serve Yahweh alone, so they were defeated and exiled.

We who belong to God’s grace in Christ are also called to a life that is set apart from the world around us, a life of love and service to Yahweh alone. Those who belong to the world serve themselves, money, sexual promiscuity, and many other false gods. Sadly, we often still live that way. That is why we need Jesus. He lived for us a perfect life of love to His Heavenly Father. His obedience is credited to our accounts, so we are accepted as righteous by God and can be with Him forever. He then gives us new birth so that we are able to live transformed lives to His honour.

Meditate on verse 9. How are you going to apply it to your life?
Heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, help me not to be yoked to those who live evil lives in my community. Amen.
