Text: Esther 7:1-10
The King and Haman are now at Queen Esther’s second banquet, and again the King promises to grant any request she makes. Esther then tells the King that she and her people have been sold into annihilation. King Ahasuerus is angry when he hears this. Esther then says that Haman is the man responsible. Haman pleads with Esther to spare his life, but the King has him executed.
An important “office” to observe here is that of mediator or intercessor. Esther went before the King to plead for the protection of her people, and he granted her request. She was acting as a mediator, going between the King and her people. Even Haman recognized the importance of Esther’s office. He threw himself before her to beg for her protection. If she had wanted to protectHaman, the King would surely have granted it (v.2). A necessary function of our High Priest Jesus is mediation. Jesus stands between the Father and His people to plead for our deliverance from God’s judgment/condemnation against our sin. We are safe only because of the mediatorial work of Christ. He brings His righteousness, death, and resurrection to the Father on our behalf, and we are accepted. If you are not sure if God will save you, then throw yourself upon Jesus and beg for His pardon. He promised to give it (John 6:37).
Meditate on verse 10. What is God teaching you in this verse?
Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, help me not to mistreat people and instead serve them diligently. Amen.
