Text: Ezra 2:1-70
In this chapter, the long list of names is not a genealogy, which is a line of descendance. These are the names of those who were among the captives of Judah, who were taken to Babylon. Specially important to note is the listing of the priests. In order for proper worship to resume, there must be priests to serve in the Temple. And the only ones who may serve as priests are those whoare directly descended from Aaron, Moses’ brother. Adding numbers listed from vv. 64-65, the total comes to 49,697.
It is certainly biblical for a Church to have a proper membership role, and each of us should become an official member of a congregation (not just attend!). All of us are known personally, intimately, perfectly by God (Mat.10:30), and
our names are listed in His book (Exo.32:32; Rev.21:27). Jesus Christ, the great High Priest, has done everything necessary for us to be in God’s Kingdom. And High Priest Jesus continues to intercede for us even now. And on that day when all God’s people are gathered together in His presence, there will be so many people that no one will be able to count us all (Rev.7:9).
Meditate on verses 36-42. What key message do you get from these verses? (Priests).
Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, help me to be a good priest in my family and community. Help me to lead my family in a proper worship of You. Amen.
