Text: Luke 7:31-50
The religious leaders of the time hated both John the Baptist and Jesus for mutually inconsistent reasons (vv. 31-35). They talked ill of John because of his fasting and not taking wine; they hated Jesus because He ate joyfully and enjoyed wine with tax collectors and sinners. In both cases, the Pharisees were exposing their hypocrisy.

As one of the Pharisees invited Jesus for a meal (v.36) an uninvited guest, a lady from the City, joined them. The Pharisee had invited other guests (v.37). To them, it was unthinkable for a woman, and moreover of her character, to join men; but her desperate situation gave her the courage to seek for forgiveness from the Lord (v.38).

It is important to note that not all the people that Jesus healed were saved. It was only those who showed true faith in Him (v. 50) that He would save.

Meditate on verse 50. What is God teaching you in this verse?

Almighty and ever loving Father, I pray in the name of Jesus Christ, that Your Spirit will always remind me of all the blessings You have given me and all members of my household. Father, may we all have true faith in You and avoid all hypocritical tendencies. Amen.
