Text Hosea 4:1-19
Once again Hosea is revealing that God is accusing His people in a court of
law: ‘they are unfaithful’ (vv.1-2). This language is to show how serious God is about sin. Sin is not a mistake, a brief weakness in judgement, or forgetfulness.
Sin is personal and deeply offensive; for it is against a Holy and a Righteous
God, who is Himself a Person who has given us His law. We try to make our
words weak on this topic, but we cannot. Our sin is heavy and serious. This
is because God is aware of every thought, word, or action that we take which breaks His law. He knows everything we think or do, and evaluates whether or not we are right or wrong. It’s His nature to do so. Therefore, it is not cruel or unfair for Him to be this way with us.
