Text: Joshua 10:1-43

Five kings merge their armies to fight against Gibeon, because Gibeon surrendered to Israel. Israel is obligated to protect Gibeon because of the Covenant made in chapter 9. Yahweh promised to give the victory to Israel (v8). But it still must have been a difficult battle, because Joshua prayed to Yahweh (v12), then God told His prophet to command the sun to stop moving, thus giving Israel more time to fight.

In our Christian lives we must see ourselves as engaged in warfare (Eph. 6:10), we fight in the bright day and in sobriety (1 Thess. 5:8), not in darkness (Luke 22:53); and whatever is necessary for our spiritual well-being will be provided by God. In Joshua’s battle against the five kings, more time was needed, so the sun stood still. For us, there are many things needed, and God will provide. Everything that is necessary for our spiritual well-being is written in God’s Word, the Bible. But let us especially see God’s provision in Jesus Christ. Jesus is the Sun, the light of the world, who has risen for our victory against all enemies. Stay close to Jesus.

Meditate on verse 8. How are you going to apply it to your life?

Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, I choose to trust You to give me victory over my enemies. Amen.
