Text: Ezra 4:1-24
Opposition to God’s work among His people is a very ancient story. Ever since Satan’s temptations, and the disobedience of Adam, all humanity became sinners, became enemies against God and against one another, especially targeting God’s chosen people, as when Cain killed his brother, Abel. Every day there is human hatred against God and others, especially against believers, and it will always be so. However, God’s plans cannot be stopped or delayed.
Everything advances according to His plan and work, and that includes the
ways of sin.
Then God the eternal Son, Jesus Christ, entered our existence to face the
opposition. His earthly ministry was constantly opposed, and yet He defeated all of it. Jesus told His disciples, “…If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you…” (John15:20, ESV). Opposition will always come against the Church, from the world (pleasures and problems), the devil, and our very own flesh. Do not be deluded to think that being a follower of Christ means a problem-free life.
In fact, being a Christian generates more challenges. You now face challenges unbelievers do not face! But take heart, Jesus your Saviour overcame the world (John16:33). And one day you will enter paradise, where there are no problems, no sins, no death forever.
Meditate on verse 3. How are you going to apply it to your life?
Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, help me to stand firm and avoid the
company of or union with unbelievers. Amen.
