Text: Luke 23:44-56
As Jesus was being led to be crucified, a multitude of people (including women) were mourning and lamenting for Him (v.27), but Jesus told the women to weep for themselves and their children (v.28) saying that: “For if they do these things when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?” (v.31, ESV).
This proverb meant that if Jesus an innocent (green tree) person could be
tortured this way under the Roman authority, then what will happen to the
Jews who are guilty (dry tree).
In the process of crucifying Jesus Christ, the soldiers fulfilled Psalm 22:18 by dividing His garments among themselves (v.34). It was the custom that those who carried out the execution would be given the clothes of the crucified person.
As Jesus was being prepared for execution, many came to be entertained (v.48) by the whole process, but instead they were perturbed by Jesus’s death and returned home “beating their breasts,” a sign of grief. You must grieve over your sins and seek forgiveness from Jesus Christ the Saviour and Lord to those who put their trust in Him.
Meditate on verse 48. How are you going to apply it to your life?
Heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, forgive me for the many times I have taken You for granted and mocked You by my actions. Amen.
