Text: 2 Kings 4:1-44
You just read the story, the true account, of a woman who is newly widowed and suddenly finds herself in poverty. Why is this story here? Is it only to show Yahweh’s power through Prophet Elisha or compassion for the poor? That’s true, but there’s also a redemptive purpose being taught. Scripture frequently uses oil to symbolize the person and work of the Holy Spirit (1 Sam.16:13).
In today’s chapter we learn that God is still at work among His people, even
though they have abandoned their Husband. Yahweh will not abandon them utterly, but He will redeem them from their spiritual poverty and adultery.
As God anointed David and filled him with the Holy Spirit, so was Jesus empowered for His earthly ministry (Mat.3:16). We who belong to God in Christ are also filled with the Holy Spirit (Act.1:5-8). We are sinners by nature, separated from the richness of life with God. By His grace we have been filled to overflowing measure of His Holy Spirit (Act.2:5, 33, 38), and we will live with Him forever.
Meditate on verse 23. What is God teaching you in this verse? How are you
going to respond to it?
My heavenly Father, help me to remain positive in the midst of difficulties as I put my trust in You. In the name of Jesus Christ I have prayed. Amen.
