When Joshua dies, the nation asked the Lord (Yahweh) who should lead. By asking this question, the nation has acknowledged that Yahweh is their leader. Asking for His guidance is a sign of good spiritual health. Judah is chosen by God, Judah then calls on the tribe of Simeon to join the battle, and they are victorious. At this point in history, Israel is doing well, but eventually God sends human leaders, “judges”, and eventually a king.
The tribe of Judah continues to take the lead in God’s plan of redemption. It is from Judah that God raises up David to be King. Even though the first king was Saul of the tribe of Benjamin, that comes to an end. After that, God promises that all the kings will be descendants of David (2 Samuel 7:16).
Eventually, we come to Jesus, of the tribe of Judah, of the line of David. Jesus is the eternal King who has been conquering all the enemies of God’s people and drawing to Himself everyone who will inherit the land of eternal life.
Meditate on verse 7. What is God teaching you in this verse?
Heavenly and ever-forgiving Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, I pray that You graciously have mercy on me and do not treat me as I deserve according to my sins. Amen.
