Text: 1 Samuel 18:1-30
After David’s defeat of Goliath, King Saul spoke to him. At that point Jonathan loved David as he loved himself. The two men made a covenant with each other, a relationship of union (please do not think it meant homosexuality), which included kindness to each other’s descendants (cf. 20:42). Jonathan gave David the prince’s robe and weapons, treating David like the prince and future king. David also had a strong love for Jonathan (cf. 2 Sam.1:26).

The love between these two men is as strong as human love can get. Yet there is a love that is even stronger!– the love of Jesus for each of those who belong to Him. He is the friend who sticks closer than a brother (Psalm18:24); Jesus even
calls us His friends (John15:15), and in the great love of God for His people, we are united; we are bound to Jesus (John15:5; Rom.6:5). All the blessings of God’s grace are ours in Christ (Eph.1:6).

Meditate on verse 12. What is God teaching you in this verse?
Ever loving Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, I pray that I remain in Your loving presence. Do not depart from me, precious Lord. Amen.
