Text: Psalm 23:1-6
This psalm is probably the most famous one of all. It is even considered to be one of the greatest poems of all human history. Psalm 23 helps us understand something about the nature of God and of His relationship with His people. The first four verses sweetly describe God as a loving Shepherd who gently cares for His sheep, His people. The last two verses show God as a gracious Host, gracious because He prepares the table for us, He anoints us, He fills our cup to overflowing measure. This is the greatness of God’s redemption, that He has blessed His enemies by giving them the fullness of His love.
Jesus Christ refers to shepherd passages like this when He calls Himself the Good Shepherd (John10:11): in fact, He is identifying Himself as God.
We get the added insight that Jesus’ Shepherding includes His death to pay the penalty for His wayward sheep. As those who belong to this Good Shepherd, we must give a closer consideration of Psalm 23:3, “He leads me in paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.” This is the transformed life. We are to follow the Lord and live a life of righteousness. It will often be difficult, and when you fail, the Lord will receive you. He is always with you, giving you the grace to follow. He chose you and will see you through to the end.
Mediate on verse 4. How are you going to respond to it?
Heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, help me not to fear the evil doers because I know You are with me. Amen.
