Text: Nehemiah 6:1-14
The enemies of the true worship of Yahweh understood that Nehemiah was a strong leader, he was going to complete the wall, remove all the bad things from the Temple, etc. So, they made a plot to kill him. They sent Shemaiah (a spy for the enemy) to ill advise Nehemiah to hide inside the Temple in order to be safe from the enemies. But Nehemiah knew it was a trap. His answer is very important. He said, “…Should such a man as I run away? …” (v.11, ESV). He knew he had a great work before him, and that he needed to lead the people in accomplishing it.
Nehemiah was a type of “Jesus Christ” in this situation. The religious authorities often tried to deter Jesus, to accuse Him falsely, or even to kill Him before His time. But Jesus came to do a great work – the redemption of His people; and nothing would be able to prevent that. You might think your own work
is insignificant, but it is what God has given you to do, so do it well. There might be people who try to distract you, perhaps threaten you, or even try to sabotage your efforts. Do not be deterred. Entrust yourself and your work to the One who gave it to you, and do your work as worship unto Him.
Meditate on verse 10-11. What is God teaching you in these verses?
Heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, give me the ability to stand firm against my enemies and be able to accomplish the work that is before me. Amen.
