Text: Deuteronomy 5:1-16
When Yahweh gave Israel their new homeland, it was expected that they would have servants and slaves. Some were poor Israelites and some were from defeated nations. Slaves had no rights, so we might think that they should not be permitted to rest on the Sabbath day. But that is not what God commanded. When Israelites rested and worshipped on the Sabbath, they were required to release their servants from their labors, so that they too could rest. The Sabbath is for all humanity, not just for Israel (even the animals were given the day to rest!).
If God has given you the ability to engage in a business, or perhaps you are able to hire workers for your home, please remember to give them the Sabbath day to rest and worship. You are a servant of Christ, and He gives you the Sabbath day. If your workers do not know about the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, then explain the good message to them, and encourage them to attend worship at a good biblical Christian Church. This is another way your work serves as worship.
Meditate on verses 13-15. How are you going to apply them to your life?
Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, help us to allow our workers to observe
Your Day, Sunday. Amen
