Text: Amos 1:1-15
Amos a shepherd and a sycamore tree farmer was from the Southern Kingdom (Judah). But he prophesied to the Northern Kingdom (Israel). At the time Israel was a very prosperous nation in terms of economics and politics, but was spiritually bankrupt due to idol worship, especially at Bethel, the nations religious centre. So, Amos prophesied against the nation’s social and religious corruption. Amos announces that because of these sins Mount Carmel, a very fertile area, was going to dry up (v.2).
“…For three transgressions …for four…” was an ancient Near East Poetry
stylistic saying, meaning “many transgressions” (vv.3, 6, 9, 11, 13). As Amos pronounced God’s judgement on Israel’s neighbours for many transgressions they had committed against God, may be the people of Israel were cheering (vv.3-2:6). However, Amos then prophesied God’s judgement on Israel. The worse sins of their neighbours could not be Israel’s excuse not to be punished.

God is a just judge; He judges all the people impartially. Do not look at your neighbour as the worst sinner and you then think you can be excused because you seem to be sinless. God will punish you too, unless you repent. Repent and receive forgiveness through Jesus Christ alone, the Son of God.

Meditate on verse 2. What is God teaching you in this verse? How are you
going to respond to it?
Father in heaven, have mercy on us, and keep our land productive. Forgive us all our sins. In the name of Jesus Christ we have prayed. Amen.
