Text: Jeremiah 48:1-47
The Moabites were the descendants of Lot who came about as a result of incest from a relationship between Lot and one of his daughters (Gen. 19:30-37). They contributed a lot to Israel’s Idol worship (Num. 25:1-3). They were later defeated by Babylon and they disappeared as a nation. The main sin of Moab was pride (v.29). The danger with pride is that one takes credit for what God has done. It also involves looking down on others. It is good to appreciate what we do (Eccl. 3:22), but not to overestimate our own ability and importance (Rom. 12:3).
Chemosh was the main god of Moab (Num. 21:29) and child sacrifice was an important element in this worship (2 Kings 3:26-27). God is judging the nation of Moab to make it clear that these human made gods cannot match God the Creator of all things.
Meditate on verse 29. How are you going to respond to it?
Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, forgive us as a nation for the pride and
Idol worship we have indulged in. Amen.
