Text: 2 Kings 25:1-30
In the year 586 B.C., the city of Jerusalem was attacked by Babylon and
destroyed, including the then marvelous temple of God. King Zedekiah was
captured in flight, his sons were executed in his presence; and then he was
blinded. It would appear that the Kingdom had come to an end. But in the last verses of the Book, we read about King Jehoiachin, who had been captured by the Babylonians, eleven years before the final destruction of Jerusalem and Judah, being released from prison and given a comfortable dwelling with an income, in Babylon. This is an indicator that God was not yet finished with Judah. Yahweh was maintaining the covenant He made with David, which is ultimately fulfilled in/by King Jesus (we noted earlier, that this King features in the genealogy of Jesus Christ as “Jeconiah”, Mat.1.11; name is also confirmed in Jer. 27.20).
This is our confidence that we who belong to Christ will reach eternal life –
God’s covenant of faithfulness to His eternal Son. God will punish every sin,
and we all deserve condemnation. But Jesus Christ paid that penalty for all His people. If you trust Jesus to be your Saviour, God promises to save you, and He will not change His mind. Praise the Lord, Oh my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name! Amen!
Meditate on verses 11-12. What is God teaching you in these verses? How are you going to respond to them?
Merciful Heavenly Father, forgive us as a nation for we have remained in sin despite Your grace and forbearance. In Your judgement, have mercy upon us. In the name of Jesus Christ I have prayed. Amen.
