Text: 1 Kings 6:1-38
This chapter mentions several parts of the temple. Let’s focus on one. In verses 31-32, we read of two doors that covered the inner sanctuary, the Most Holy place, where the Ark was placed. On the doors were carved two cherubim (unique heavenly beings). In Moses’ tabernacle there was a curtain with images of cherubim sewn into it.
When Adam and Eve sinned, they were removed from the Garden of Eden. Real cherubim prevented them from going back into the garden, namely back into a close relationship with the Lord. Inside the temple, the doors (with carved cherubim) prevented the worshippers from going to the Ark, the symbol of God’s presence. Only the High Priest could enter, only once a year, on the Day of Atonement.
When King Jesus, our High Priest, died on the cross, Matthew 27:51 states that the Curtain of the Temple was torn in two. That means access to God is no longer prevented or limited. Even though our sin keeps us away from God, Jesus paid our death penalty so that we may go back into the garden to enjoy God’s blessed presence – now and forever. Dear friend, do not stay away. Consider what God did to have you with Him. Come close! He loves you. Come close!
Meditate on verses 31-32. What is God teaching you in these verses?
