The outgoing Provost of All Saints’ Cathedral, Kampala, Rev. Canon Michael Mukhwana handed over the office to his counterpart, Rev. Canon Dr. Rebecca Margret Nyegenye on Thursday 7 February 2019 at a function held in Provost’s office.
During the handover ceremony, the clergy warden, Mr. Amos Mwesigye thanked the outgoing provost for steeling All Saints’ Cathedral for the last four years. “We have enjoyed your ministry among us and now it’s time to release you to St. Andrews- Bukoto” he said.
The Diocesan Secretary Diocese of Kampala, Rev. Canon John Awodi quoting Genesis 12:1-9, he encourage both the outgoing and the incoming Provost to take an example of Abraham who was called by God to go to the unknown place and he obeyed. “God has called us in various ways but the heart of the matter is that He has called us. Obedience is a virtue we hold onto as Christians” he said.
The outgoing Provost, Canon Mukhwana thanked God for the opportunity of serving at the Cathedral and the grace to minister to God’s people.
Following the diocesan announcement to transfer and appoint her Clergy to various Parishes, Rev. Canon Michael Mukhwana- Provost was transferred to St. Andrews Bukoto Church of Uganda as the Vicar and Archdeacon Eastern Archdeaconry while Rev. Canon Geoffrey Byarugaba- Vicar was transferred to Church of Resurrection Bugolobi Church of Uganda as the Vicar.
The Rev. Canon Dr. Rebecca Margaret Nyegenye Chaplain, Thorncroft Chapel UCU came to the Cathedral as the Acting Provost while Rev. David Serunjoji, Vicar, The Church of Resurrection Bugolobi Church of Uganda came in as the Assistant Provost/Vicar.
Who is Rev. Canon Dr. Rebecca Margret Nyegenye?
Rev. Canon Dr. Rebecca Margret Nyegenye is a clergy in the Church of Uganda. Born and raised in the eastern district of Busia to the late Rev. James Efumbi and Janet Efumbi, she is the second born of seven.
Dr. Nyegenye holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from University of KwaZulu-Natal, Master of Arts in Theology from Trinity Episcopal School for Ministry USA, Bachelor of Divinity of Uganda Christian University, and a Certificate in Theology from Bishop Usher Wilson Theological College Buwalasi.
She attended Namugodi Primary School and Busia senior secondary school. She has undergone several short courses and trainings on Bible Exposition, Alpha Global Leaders’ Training, Basic Counseling Skills, and Muslim Background Believer’s Discipleship Training.
Married on February 10, 1990 to Mr. Wilson Nyegenye, the National Equipment and Supply Chain Coordinator-National Laboratory Services in the Ministry of Health, they have three children – Dr. Ronald Peter Mukisa, Winfred Sarah Kwagala, student at Law Development Centre, and Pricilla Barbra Mirembe, a fourth-year student of Bachelor of Laws at Uganda Christian University.
Ordained in 1997 and priested in 2000 in Bukedi Diocese, Dr. Nyegenye first worked at St. John’s COU in Busia as Assistant Vicar and Acting Vicar between 1996 and 1998. She later moved to Uganda Christian University as the Chaplain’s Assistant in 2002. In 2004, she was promoted to Assistant Chaplain till September 3, 2012 when she was appointed Chaplain.
She got saved at the age of twelve. While watching The Passion of Christ at Makina COU, she saw the portrayed suffering and agony Jesus went through to save mankind, and decided to give her life to Christ.
Her passion is in discipleship, pastoral care and counseling, evangelism, preaching and mentoring. Her basic interest in research is on Biblical leadership with hope to develop church leadership.
Rev. Canon Dr. Rebecca Margret Nyegenye is the first lady to hold that position in the Diocese of Kampala.
The Assistant Provost- Rev. Captain David Serunjoji
The Rev. Captain David Serunjoji was born in the western district of Isingiro to the late Wycliffe Katamba and Sanyu Katamba. A clergyman in Church of Uganda under the Diocese of Kampala, Capt. Serunjoji is married to Barbra Kyomugisha. The two are blessed with five children (including twins).
He holds a Bachelor of Theology in Missiology from the University of South Africa, Diploma in Missiology from Carlile Theological College in Kenya and a Diploma in Accounts from National College of Business Studies, Nakawa. He attended Kololo High School in Kampala for A-Level, Kihanda senior secondary school and Kihanda Primary School both in Isingiro district.
Ordained in 2005 at All Saints’ Cathedral Kampala, Capt. Serunjoji worked at St. John’s Church of Uganda, Kamwokya, All Saints Cathedral , Kampala in charge of Home Cell and Prayer Ministry for three years before serving as the Diocesan Missions’ Coordinator (Kampala Diocese) for one year and six months.
He later moved to the Church of Resurrection Bugolobi Church of Uganda as Vicar, and has been there for six years.
During the 1994 November Mission Week at All Saints’ Cathedral, Kampala, Dr. Denis White, an evangelist from Kenya, preached and made an altar call. David was among the first people to step to the front and receive salvation.
He was discipled by Life Ministry Uganda under Jonathan Besigomwe who made a follow up for three weeks.
Capt. Serunjoji has a passion for Ministry, spiritual revival, finishing the Cathedral under construction and coordinating the pastoral team to work in harmony with the laity.
