Text: Esther 6:1-14

As God continues His work of providing care for His people, He is even preparing wicked Haman for his eventual destruction (v.13). One night the King had difficulty sleeping. (It could have been God keeping him awake, because God is the One who designs and works all things.) So, the King commanded someone to read the history of the King’s activities. When the King heard that Mordecai saved the King’s life (2:23), he also learned that no reward was given to Mordecai. The King asked Haman about a reward, and Haman thought the King wanted to reward him instead. So, he suggested a grand public display from a nobleman (vv.7-9). Then the King commanded Haman to do that for Mordecai. Haman obeyed, but he was humiliated. When he told his family and friends, they could see that Haman was doomed for destruction.

The Scripture teaches that God is Sovereign over all things, “… even the wicked for the day of trouble” (Prov.16:4, ESV). Haman thought he only hated Mordecai and the people of Judah, but he actually hated God (Rom.1:30). When the Pharisee Saul was arresting Christians, Jesus said to him, “… why are you persecuting me?” (Acts 9:4, ESV). Hating believers is the same as hating God. Though Haman will be destroyed in this life, there is also coming an eternal condemnation. Everyone is a God-hater by nature, and the only way for you to escape condemnation is to trust that Jesus lived, died, and resurrected to save you – personally.

Meditate on verse 13. What is God teaching you in this verse?

Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, we thank You for fighting our battles and giving us victories. Amen.
