Brief History of All Saints’ Cathedral

 Founded in 1912 as a chaplaincy of a European colonial hospital, All Saints’ Cathedral, Kampala (ASCK) has, through the times grown and attained the status of a Cathedral for the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda. The Cathedral is governed by the Canons of Church of Uganda and the ASCK Constitution of 1975. The Cathedral is also led by the Provost who is assisted by a team of clergy and lay staff. At ASCK, various Ministries, Programmes and Fellowships are run by committees composed of mostly volunteer Christians who are parishioners.

Need for a new Cathedral

All Saints’ Building project actively started in 2004; following a needs assessment survey which ranked the need for adequate worship space as prime. All Saints’ Cathedral Building Committee (ACP) was appointed in 2009 as the successor committee of the Archbishop’s Building Committee (ABC). It was mandated to spearhead the building of a new Diocesan Cathedral in order to address the need for worship space and other attendant cathedral facilities. This in addition entailed acquiring additional land, master planning the available land and managing the extensive building project and its ensuing sub-projects.

 

Building Timelines/Historical Milestones

The All Saints’ Cathedral Building Project (ACP) Team has been steering the project on behalf of the Cathedral Council, in collaboration with the Cathedral Management since 2009. The broad assignment is to build a Cathedral that will address the need for more worship space. Other indispensable objectives are: acquiring additional land, master planning the available Cathedral land, and managing this extensive project and its ensuing sub-projects.
